DPF Repairs Geelong

Hunter Cuthill specialises in DPF diagnosis and repairs for modern European diesel vehicles in Geelong. We regularly diagnose and repair Diesel Particulate Filter faults on Land Rover, Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, BMW, Jaguar, MINI diesel and INEOS Grenadier vehicles.
A DPF warning light should never be ignored.

Modern diesel emission systems are complex, and a blocked or overloaded DPF is often the result of another fault elsewhere in the vehicle. Simply forcing a regeneration or replacing the DPF without diagnosing the cause can lead to repeated failures and unnecessary expense.

What Is A DPF?

A Diesel Particulate Filter captures soot from the exhaust system and periodically burns it off through a regeneration process. For regeneration to occur correctly, the engine, sensors, fuel system, EGR system, turbocharger, exhaust temperature sensors and driving conditions all need to be within the correct operating range.

When one part of the system fails, soot can build up and the DPF may become restricted.

Common DPF Fault Symptoms

Your vehicle may have a DPF fault if you notice:

  • DPF warning light on the dash
  • Engine warning light illuminated
  • Restricted performance message
  • Limp mode
  • Poor acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Excessive exhaust smoke
  • Cooling fan running frequently
  • Strong exhaust smell
  • Failed regeneration attempts
  • AdBlue or NOx warnings appearing with DPF faults

DPF Diagnosis At Hunter Cuthill

Correct diagnosis is critical. Before recommending repairs, we may inspect and test:

  • DPF soot load
  • DPF ash load where available
  • Exhaust backpressure
  • Exhaust temperature sensor readings
  • Differential pressure sensor operation
  • EGR system operation
  • Turbocharger boost pressure
  • Intake system leaks
  • Fuel injector performance
  • Engine thermostat operation
  • AdBlue and NOx system faults
  • Regeneration history and conditions
  • Related engine fault codes

Forced DPF Regeneration

In some cases, a forced DPF regeneration may be possible if the soot level is within a safe range and no underlying faults prevent regeneration. However, a forced regeneration is not always appropriate. If the DPF is too restricted or another system fault is present, forcing a regeneration may not repair the issue and can create risk.

Hunter Cuthill assesses each vehicle before deciding whether a forced regeneration is suitable.

DPF Repairs For European Vehicles

We regularly work on DPF systems fitted to:

  • Range Rover
  • Range Rover Sport
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Land Rover Defender
  • BMW diesel vehicles
  • Jaguar diesel vehicles
  • MINI diesel vehicles
  • INEOS Grenadier

Why DPF Faults Return

DPF faults often return when the cause of the soot build-up is not repaired. Common causes include:

  • Faulty EGR valve
  • Blocked EGR cooler
  • Failed exhaust temperature sensor
  • Faulty differential pressure sensor
  • Boost leaks
  • Split intercooler hoses
  • Faulty thermostat
  • Injector issues
  • Short-trip driving
  • AdBlue or NOx faults
  • Previous incomplete repairs
