Discovery 4
The Discovery 4 remains one of the most popular Land Rover models we see at Hunter Cuthill. They are comfortable, capable tow vehicles and excellent four-wheel drives, but as they get older, correct servicing and early diagnosis become increasingly important.
At our Geelong West workshop, we regularly service and repair Discovery 4 models with both the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel engines. Many of the problems we see are manageable when identified early but can become significantly more expensive if warning signs are ignored.
Regular Servicing Matters
A Discovery 4 service should involve more than simply replacing the engine oil and filter.
The vehicle’s age, kilometres, previous service history and how it is being used all need to be considered. A Discovery used primarily for short trips around Geelong can have very different maintenance requirements to one regularly towing a caravan or travelling off-road.
At Hunter Cuthill, our Discovery 4 inspections can include engine oil and filter replacement, fluid level checks, brake inspection, suspension inspection, driveline checks, battery testing and a visual inspection for oil, coolant and other fluid leaks.
We can also carry out diagnostic testing when required.
EGR Valve Problems
Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves are another common area requiring attention on TDV6 Discovery models.
Carbon deposits can affect the operation of the EGR system and may eventually cause engine warning lights, poor performance, hesitation or diagnostic fault codes.
Correct diagnosis is important because an EGR-related fault code does not automatically mean the EGR valve itself has failed. Airflow problems, wiring faults, boost leaks and other engine management issues can sometimes produce similar symptoms.
Suspension Faults
The Discovery 4’s air suspension provides excellent ride quality and off-road capability, but the system becomes more susceptible to faults as components age.
Problems can include air leaks, compressor faults, height sensor problems and suspension valve issues.
Typical symptoms include the vehicle dropping overnight, taking too long to raise, suspension warning messages or uneven vehicle height.
We recommend diagnosing the cause rather than automatically replacing the air compressor, as several different faults can produce similar symptoms.
Cooling System Leaks
Cooling system condition is particularly important on the TDV6 engine.
Plastic cooling system components, hoses, thermostats and other connections deteriorate with age and heat cycling.
Even a relatively small coolant leak should be investigated. Continuing to drive a vehicle that is losing coolant can potentially lead to overheating and considerably more serious engine damage.
If you regularly need to top up the coolant reservoir, the vehicle should be pressure tested and inspected.
Oil Leaks
Oil leaks are also common on older Discovery 4 models.
The source needs to be correctly identified before repairs are recommended because oil can travel across the engine and underbody, making the leak appear to originate somewhere different.
Cleaning the affected area and reinspecting it can sometimes be necessary before accurately determining the repair required.
Transmission and Driveline Maintenance
The automatic transmission, transfer case and differentials also require attention as these vehicles age.
Despite some vehicles originally being promoted with extended or “lifetime” fluid intervals, transmission and driveline oils deteriorate through heat, load and normal operation.
This is especially relevant for Discovery 4s used for towing.
Servicing these systems as preventative maintenance can help reduce wear and allows developing problems to be identified earlier.
Diagnostic Testing
Modern Land Rovers contain numerous interconnected electronic control modules.
When a warning light or message appears, reading the fault codes is only the beginning of the diagnostic process.
At Hunter Cuthill we use specialist diagnostic equipment to examine fault codes, live vehicle data and system operation before recommending repairs.
This helps avoid replacing parts unnecessarily based solely on a stored fault code.
